Jiujiang University Medical College (JUMC) is one of 20 schools under the administration of Jiujiang University. The college is located in central downtown by the beautiful Lake Gantang in Jiujiang City, Jiangxi Province, P.R.China. As a community-oriented medical school, the mission of the college is to produce quality health Professionals for urban and rural communities of China.
    The history of the Medical College can be traced back to 1901 when it existed as Danforth Hospital Nursing School. In 1951 the nursing school merged into a newly set-up medical school called the Jiangxi Third Provincial Physician's School of Secondary Education. The school changed its name to Jiujiang Physician School of Secondary Education in 1955 and Jiujiang Medical College of higher education in 1958. In 2002, Jiujiang Medical College merged with three schools and established Jiujiang University. During its more than 100 years the college has produced more than 20000 physicians, nurses and health-related professionals for China. With a current student population of more than 4000, JUMC has 150 staff members,among whom are 12 full professors and 32 associate professors.
    JUMC offers five year programs in medicine and anesthesiology leading to bachelor degree. In addition, three-year training programs of medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, medical laboratory, medical imaging, health information management and combination of traditional Chinese medicine and western medicine are taught.
The college consists of three administrative departments which include: General Office,Department of Acadernic Affairs and Department of Students :Affairs. There ate also three academic departments under the college: Basic Medical Sciences, Clinical Medical Sciences and Pharmacy and Health Information Management. The Medical College has a total of 21 teach- in divisions.
    The well-equipped Medical Scientific Research Center, Rural Medical Education Center and Medicolegal Investigation Center are involved in a variety of ambitious research projects. The Medical Laboratory Center, which consists of Basic Medical Labs, Clinical Skills Labs and Pharmacological Labs, provides students with "hands-on" activities in experimentation
Jiujiang University Hospital and 100 other hospital serve as sites for students` practical clerkship and internship.Other facilities such as the Medical Library, University Iinformation Network, Audio-visual and Multi-media services provide students with up-to -date information and learning techniques.
    JUMC has been actively involved in rural medical education reform over the last two decades. Educational programs such as "Two Strengthenings and One Optimization" ,"Family Medicine" and "Two-phase" have been implemented and the reformed model is now a leading model among Chinese rural medical education institutions. The college first introduced Standardized Patient Method to Chinese medical education in 1992 and established the first comprehensive clinical skills lab in China in 1991. JUMC' s efforts and achievements in medical education reform have drawn nation-wide attention and made remarkable impact on the Chinese community of medical education. The college has been awarded two national level prizes and 7 provincial level prizes.
    Jiujiang University Medical College has an active international academic exchange.More than 100 staff members have been sent to countries such as the United States, Thailand,the Philippines, Indonesia, Australia and European Countries for training, conferences and other academic exchanges. The college has established cooperative relationships with Kettering Medical Center of USA, Faculty of Medicine of Chiang Mai University of Thailand and Dornogobi Medical College of Mongolia. JUMC is an associate member of the network:TUFH. It is also a grant recipient of the China Medical Board of New York (CMB). In recent years JUMC has received over US $ 2 million from the CMB designed to further improve and enhance the medical educational programs at the college. Through these grants JUMC has continuously worked hard to contribute to the improvement of the overall good health of the Chinese people.
